5 /5 Kamlesh Lalwani: Update: Oscar called me back to apologize about not being clear about the total amount and gave me a refund of $117. So changing the review to 5 stars.
====================
I called them to get a quote for getting brakes replaced. The shop manager (Oscar) told me it will depend on whether the rotors need to be replaced or not. He talked at length about wanting to check the condition of the rotors and replacing them only if they really needed to be replaced. I was impressed by that because most shops always want to replace the rotors too when replacing the pads and felt that I could trust this shop. In hindsight that trust turned out to be misplaced and I believe this whole emphasis on wanting to check rotor condition and not replacing them unless necessary was a ruse.
He gave a quote of $264 before taxes for replacing just the brake pads and said that rotors will be additional $117 but did not give me total amount for that scenario. To make sure I understood him correctly, I paraphrased him to confirm that with rotors the total is going to be around $381 and he seemed to agree. Half an hour later, I dropped the car at the shop. Later he called me and said that the rotors will indeed need to be replaced. I asked him to go ahead with it.
The surprise came when I went to pick up the car. I was told that the $117 parts cost was for each rotor rather than both and so the total before taxes was $498. He claimed that he was very clear in his communication all along, the calls were recorded, etc. I asked him why he did not correct me when I paraphrased the total amount as $381 back to him in our earlier call. He did not have a good answer for it. By that time, I felt quite stupid about having trusted this person and for not having asked for a written estimate. I decided to not argue about it and paid him what he was asking for.
Advice for others: Dont rely on verbal estimates from this shop. Always ask them to provide a written estimate. If they are talking to you in a way that makes you feel they have your best interests in mind, think twice. It could be an intentional ruse to disarm you.
