1 /5 Josh Wang: I trained at Flex Training Center for a little over a year. When their front desk guy told me that my 1-year contract with them had ended, I explained that I was moving out of NY in two months. In response, he charged me $98 for the remaining months that I would be using the gym. I appreciated the flexibility of their payment and membership system and assumed that was the end of the story.
However, after leaving NY, I continued to be charged $34.99 every month. The amount was small enough to stay below my credit cards alert threshold, so these charges went unnoticed for over a year.
When I finally realized what had happened and called Flex, the owner was dismissive and impatient upon learning the issue involved a billing overcharge. He told me that cancellations had to be done via letter mail and that he wasn’t sure if he could issue a refund.
I sent a letter explaining everything thoroughly, including my contact information, and a copy of my rental agreement to prove that I had left NY over a year ago. I never received a response from Flex. However, they recently stopped charging my card, so I assume they did receive my letter. I was able to reverse two months worth of charges through my bank, but unfortunately, I couldnt recover the rest without written proof of cancellation.
I advise everyone to exercise the same caution when canceling their membership with this gym as you would with Planet Fitness or any corporate chains with archaic and consumer-hostile cancellation policies.
