1 /5 Naomi Christian: DO NOT send your loved ones here for help, they WILL NOT get the help they need. I was ARRESTED and admitted to this emergency unit after considering suicide while going through some tough situations. Upon being brought here, I was treated like an inmate. Forced to strip naked and show my entire body to prove that I hadn’t tried smuggling anything while a man and woman were present in the room with me. Upon being taken into the unit, I could see that men and women were coexisting in the same space with one another and being allowed to roam around freely. After arrival, I spoke with my “provider” who was a nurse practitioner for about 5 minutes being asked why I felt the way I did and did I have plans to hurt myself. After speaking with me very briefly, she called a family member of mine and came back to let me know she was diagnosing me with depression and prescribing me Zoloft to help with my emotional state. I had not spoken to any psychiatrist or therapist and within about 20-30 minutes she decided that I was depressed and needed meds (which I declined because I knew I wasn’t depressed, just a drama queen when emotional). She decided to make me stay for 24 hours for “observation”. There is nowhere for patients to sleep or get any rest, I ended up being stuck sitting in an upright chair the entire night while others had to lay on the floor in order to get any rest. Many were coerced into taking sedatives in order to sleep so that the time would pass by quickly. There are no games or activities provided to patients, no therapists, nothing to do but sit and live with whatever you’re going through, or take a sedative to sleep through it. The behavioral health techs are nothing but babysitters who sit there and stare at everyone, the nurses hardly come out of there pod. I remember knocking on the window to speak with my nurse and the “director” continuously told her not to speak with me because I was bothering them too much. There are so many people in this unit who are struggling and seriously need help and they aren’t receiving it here. It’s torture. This is a place you DO NOT send family to for help, this may even worsen the condition or state of mind. After sitting there all night hardly being able to sleep, I woke up the next morning and was told I would be sent home. No tests, no therapy, no real observation. Just held there. Also keep in mind that patients are being BILLED to go through this and live through these conditions for however long they’re here. Something must be done.
