1 /5 Jarch 405: A hi-risk family member with history of stroke hits head on the ground after a bad fall. Currently on blood thinners with progressive numbness and loss of balance. Six hour wait in a waiting room and there is no room to screen or her prepare her for a CT scan to rule out a severe brain injury.
I was told by staff that it did not appear urgent with pupils being equal and reactive to light. I get a call from her inside the lobby that she has a worsening headache. No one had checked on her. I had to relay this to the ER nurse and they had offered to take her vital signs if I requested it.
Its got to be a difficult situation for the ER nurse as he says they are not refusing care, but they dont have enough staff to handle anyone in a reasonable time, regardless of their condition. Despite me displaying frustration, he handled it like a professional. I wasnt allowed to speak to anyone, but encouraged to complain to the Department of Health. I had mandatory military training scheduled in 2 hours, exceeding an 8 hour wait and they said they cannot guarantee that transportation could be provided in the event that I had to leave.
This is a world class facility for Emergency Care at the center of our county thats understaffed and continuously cutting costs, lacking competitive wages, and prioritizing administration over healthcare workers. Bremerton Harrison Hospital is now closed. Folks are driving their kids an hour away, out of county to get seen due to long wait times and the hospital being understaffed. I empathize with the elderly in the waiting room who do not have a voice.
