Disappointing Experience with Management
After searching for a gym last December, I found John Reed Fitness - but unfortunately, my overall experience ended on a very disappointing note.
I had to move out of the Dallas area to live with family while preparing for a major surgery and to save money during recovery. Before moving, I called to cancel my membership and was told I needed to come in person. When I showed up, the front desk staff told me that was incorrect and that there had been a lot of new employees who might have given out wrong information. Because of that delay, I was now being charged for another month of membership I wouldn’t be able to use.
They provided me with management’s email, and I reached out explaining the situation. I received no response to my original message, only a follow-up stating that due to the promotion I signed up for, I was locked into a one-year contract. I explained that my move was not by choice and that I was in the process of getting a life-changing surgery, but I was told that “life happens” and they would only consider ending the contract if I moved more than 25 miles away.
I provided multiple screenshots showing that my commute during the hours I would’ve been able to attend (after work) would be during peak traffic times, and each time it mapped between 28 and 30 miles away. The manager ignored parts of my email, contradicted previous responses, and after several phone calls and voicemails over three days, I received no return call.
When I finally heard back, they sent a screenshot showing 24.1 and 24.8 miles and said that meant I didn’t qualify for cancellation — a difference of less than one mile. I explained again, and was met with short, dismissive responses.
If you want a gym that only thinks of you as a number and not a person, this is the one to go to.
