2 /5 Phillip Fuller: So, let’s be real. The only other major gym in Elizabethtown is Planet Fitness. Personally, I think Etown Swim and Fitness is garbage.
So, we have to ask ourselves the question, “What does EAC have to offer that Planet Fitness doesn’t?”
Firstly, it costs $25 a month at EAC for their gym, tanning, and hydromassage. BUT, you have to pay $50 for a keycard and $50 for your yearly agreement. This is substantially more than Planet Fitness; which costs $20 for all services and access to all Planet Fitness gyms. BUT, I get this. Planet Fitness is a corporate gym and EAC is locally owned.
When I was there, there was no free WiFi. I was on a day pass, so it’s possible that it’s only for members. If not, then that’s a strike for me. Lots of people stream music while they’re at the gym and WiFi simply makes that easier.
There was NO CLEANING at this gym. If my sweaty butt was on a bench, there’s nothing to wipe up the sweat from the bench. Whoever’s next will simply need to sit in my funk. That’s just gross!
They have Smith Machines, but no benches for their Smith Machines? Why??
They mostly have free weight benches for standard bench press/incline press, but one bench didn’t even have a bar. So what’s the point of the bench??
Weight plates were all over the place. Why isn’t there a plate set for each machine? Why do I have to walk across the gym and go on a scavenger hunt for a 25lb plate because the machine I’m on has NO WEIGHTS at all??
Machines were jerry-rigged when they were unkept. A standard L-pin was used to hold plates in the machine. Duct tape was used for a machine handle. A bolt was used to hold a leg curl pad down; which didn’t do its job quite well.
There were also signs EVERYWHERE about being fined if weights are not re-racked or if someone messes with a thermostat. One sign is literally as big as their advertisement banners and hangs from their top floor. This either means that the management treats their clients as children or that their clientele acts as children. Either way, this is not an environment I want to be a part of.
So what does this place ACTUALLY provide that Planet Fitness doesn’t? An actual Hip Thrust Machine, a Hack Squat Machine, and Dumbbells over 75lbs.
Other than that, that’s it.
