24 Hour Fitness

Sneha Patel Having recently joined 24Hr Fitness in El Cerrito, I wholeheartedly recommend working with Richard LaFleche, one of the personal trainers there. Richard was the trainer with whom I made an appointment for the free orientation hour that this location offers. I, over 50 and chose Richard because he has a background in injury prevention and rehab. In that first orientation, I found Richard to be the perfect mix of patience and ability to motivate. He discussed my goals in joining the gym and mapped out a workout plan using specific machines and exercises. He then proceeded to take me through each machine, adjust it for my build to ensure a correct fit (so important to avoid strain!), demonstrate the right way to use it, and determine the weight I should start with. For each machine, he noted the seat or back adjustments, as well as the weight. I left with a clear plan of action and a cheatsheet. When it came to choosing a trainer to work with me for a couple of months to kickstart my gym habit, it was a no-brainer to work with Richard. I have greatly appreciated his approach: kindness mixed with the right amount of challenge and always very clear communication. Richard starts off his sessions with a smile, and makes the effort to really connect with his clients, understanding that its the key to being able to push them harder when the time comes. He is careful about preventing strain and working out safely. He uses a scientific basis for his training and explains the what and the why in addition to the how. Thanks to Richard, Im now a confident gym go-er, familiar with the machines he trained me on, and unafraid to try new ones for some variety. I really enjoy going to the gym and leave with a feeling of accomplishment. I feel stronger and healthier already, and know I reach my goals. As Richard kept reminding me gently, its consistency that matters. If youre new to  the gym environment or to strength training, or like me, have a specific condition that made you join, Richard is the person to help you on your journey!

City Sports Club

Lila Orangi I’ve been taking the Zumba classes with Alejandra at Berkeley City Sports Club @ 8:30 AM, and I love it. Alejandra has a diverse and energetic style; motivating everyone to dance and have a great time. She provides excellent and easy to follow instructions with high energy and enthusiasm suitable for all levels. She also includes new, fun music and choreography to each class. I totally enjoy, get a great workout at her classes and feel more energetic after the class. I highly recommend taking a Zumba class with Luisa Alejandra T.

Anytime Fitness

v َ I am so satisfied with my experience at this gym. The gym is very clean, with a good arrangement of free weights, equipment and cardio machines for its size. Out of the other Anytime Fitness locations in proximity, the Pinole location is the most well-maintained. Most of the equipment is Hammer Strength, so you can expect your machine to be functioning properly. They provide clean towels, snacks, and large amounts of sanitary wipes. You can tell that the management actually cares about their members. The environment feels comfortable, non-judgmental, and is rarely crowded. However, I’d say check the app to see when peak hours are, as the amount of people can get a bit overwhelming around that time. Another nice perk is that the key fob gives you access to any Anytime Fitness nearby, so you have 24hr access at all nearby locations. This has come in handy quite a few times! A bonus for those who have had poor experiences with nearby gyms: I’ve had a great experience with the staff. They’re kind, understanding, and most importantly… non-predatory. Talk to them yourself, you’ll see what I’m talking about. Such a positive experience is rare, and something that drove me to leave this review. Overall, I’d say it’s a great choice for who prefers a small, comfortable and clean space for their workouts!

Happy Hour Fitness Studio

Elana Marmorstein No matter your age, fitness level, or experience, taking a workout class at Happy Hour Fitness with Xabier will make you sweat and make you smile! He has an infectious energy, and paired with the workouts, really makes you want to push yourself in class. Every class is something unique and includes a great playlist. What really makes the studio unique in my opinion, is he has cultivated a group that all works together to push each other to be their best during the class. Classes always begin with dynamic stretching and end with core work and a cool down. I appreciate that Xabier always offers modifications for exercises to accommodate all fitness levels and is considerate of injuries or any barriers to exercise. If youre looking for a small fitness studio dedicated to fun workouts, fitness, and inclusivity, this is the place to be.

Bay Area Barbell

Julian Roy Probably the best option for strength training in the Richmond/Oakland area. Power bars, combo racks, and calibrated plates galore. Heavy pulls and chalking up strongly encouraged! Would recommend!

Equinox Berkeley

Paul Lasar I visted the Equinox Berkeley branch as my next job may take me to the Berkeley/Oakland area. I am a 2 year member of Equinox New York/Flatiron location. Michaela generously gave me a pass to work out. Berkeley is an excellent club. It is new, clean, well equipped with basics, has plenty of stretching room, nice architecture, a food/drinks bar, water stations, cleaning wipes, and of course, cold eucalyptus towels awaiting your in several fridges around the club. While it is clearly 5 stars, I would just suggest that the music was a little too loud in the weights area. Maybe 95% of people are listening to their own music in their headphones, so music from the club is not really required. Otherwise, I highly recommend Equinox. It might look expensive on the face of it, but this is your health, and if you go to your club 3 or 4 days more per month because its a pleasant experience, its worth every penny of that investment.

Planet Fitness

Eric Wonder I’ve been coming to this San Pablo location since they first open the staff has always been super friendly and welcoming. Even though they don’t have a janitorial staff, employees do an amazing job at keeping the club up kept.

Bridges Fitness

Susan Park My husband and I attend classes 3-4 days a week. We love the instructor lead program and see results in our weight, balance and strength. We are both retired, and like to bike, hike, kayak and ski. Bridges program is the perfect training to keep us healthy and able to do other sports without injury. It is almost like having a personal trainer without the cost. Each session can be tailored to individual needs. It is also a small community of like minded individuals who encourage each other to keep fit and to keep with the program!
