Union Church of Pocantico Hills - Tarrytown (NY)

5 /5 Eduardo Mace: This small church is home to 8 stained glass windows made by Chagall and one by Matisse (Rose). The church resembles a chapel in size were it not for the big Chagall stained glass window portraing the parable of the Good Samaritan facing the West of the Church (go in the afternoon). Well worth a visit if you are in the area. Entry to the church is paid and there is plenty of parking.

Scott Fitzgerald quote is apropos for the Rockefeller’s “little church” with 9 Chagall commissioned stained glass windows (quite an accomplishment as Rockefeller’s were Christian and Chagall’s was Jewish) each blue stained glass has a reference to the Old Testament, and add Matisse’s last artwork the simple yet ephemeral “Rose” window you get a three for one tour. 1. You can see the power of a huge New York dynasty in a little church 2. You get to gaze upon some of the best stained glass artworks in the world and if you’re lucky like I was, as an agnostic you have the rarefied spiritual experience inside of church. It’s well worth the tour. I’m not sure as to the necessity of the fee, but the organization that keeps it accessible to the public should be commended.

5 /5 Gail Adams: Gorgeous stained glass designed by Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall, thanks to the Rockefeller family. The small church’s Gothic style is also noteworthy. Go there to view in person if you can.

5 /5 J. Christopher Williams: My husband and I had our wedding there on New Years Eve - 12-31-23. We had the best time on our wedding day and working with the church to plan the event was wonderful. The staff was extremely flexible and helpful accommodating our ideas. It was a joy to be married in the beautiful sanctuary surrounded by the exquisite Marc Chagall windows and exchange our vows underneath the Henri Matisse Rose Window. We were able to customize the ceremony and had free range to design and create the reception area. Natasha and Bob from Union Church were so supportive and excited to share in the joy of our wedding day.
