Katsushika Hokusai. The Great Wave off Kanagawa (1823-31)
As the ocean embraces the globe,
Earthly life is surrounded by dreams;
Night will come - and with sonorous waves
The elements beat against their shore.
That is her voice; it urges us and asks...
Already in the harbour the magical boat has come to life;
The tide grows and quickly carries us
Into the immeasurability of dark waves.
The firmament, burning with starry glory,
Mysteriously looks from the depths, -
And we float, surrounded on all sides by the flaming abyss.
