Plymouth Jazz & Justice Church, UCC - Oakland (CA)

5 /5 Mary Vertulfo: Plymouth is a radically accepting and loving community of people, with some of the best music in Oakland. I walked in and was immediately made welcome. I have found life-long friends, music, and endless opportunities there to make real and lasting change to the greater Oakland community through their partnerships and programming. I highly recommend going to their many musical events (Monday Night Jazz, Free First Fridays… Mardi Gras, Soulful Christmas… I could go on!!) Even if you’re not looking for a spiritual home, the incredible musical talent that plays at Plymouth Church is unmatched and you will have a wonderful time here.

This church brings together people from all backgrounds and experiences under one gentle set of leadership, headed by Reverend Marjorie Wilkes Matthews. The sermons incorporate social justice and scripture readings each week, the "Justice" aspect of the title. And music is an important part of each Sunday-- but its not exactly Jazz-- more like gospel meets folk music: a piano, a guitar and a small choir.

5 /5 Robin: Beautiful architecture, relaxed yet incredibly spiritual atmosphere with some of the best gospel solos combined with jazz instrumentals. The sermons are relevant and creatively delivered. I knew instantly it was the diverse, inclusive, generous brand of Christianity Im seeking.

5 /5 Rachel Puryear: This is the most diverse church I have ever seen. Everyone can truly feel welcome here. Pastor Marjorie is awesome, and preaches with a great deal of love and compassion. This congregation exemplifies the best of religious and spiritual practice, without the dogma and being told what to think that you find in many other churches. Joyful worship, generous community, genuine love for your neighbor, and celebration of a loving God and of human diversity are all to be found here. I love this place, and it is truly special. Even after moving 30 miles away, my spouse and I still love to come back here on Sundays.
