4 /5 John Austin: Ive been looking for an Episcopal church home for several months after leaving another church... in a different denomination. No, the other church was really not my choice. Ive always been an Episcopalian and wanted to come home.
I am so pleased that Saint Andrews is now home for me. What makes the church my home? Most important: The rector and his staff. Father Martin and Father Ed are super people. Father Martin celebrates the Eucharist with the perfect blend of modern evangelistic flavor on top of the traditions of the Book of Common Prayer. If youre an Episcopalian who just came from an evangelical church like I did, St. Andrews may just work for you!
Father Ed, the associate rector, is the real deal. Hes been a priest for 60 years. 60. Ed has seen a lot of the world, having served in WWII and as a chaplain in the Nam. I love to talk to Ed. Hes humble and wise.
Our choir is small but talented. If I could sing, Id join them. But if I did, the sanctuary would be evacuated when I opened my mouth. If you are a singer and want to make a real impact in a choir, come check us out.
The church has a wonderful pipe organ that fills the sanctuary with sound on Sunday morning. It really adds to the worship. Once a month, a small ensemble of musicians leads the worship. On those Sundays, a more contemporary set of worship songs are sung. Songs that remind me of my old Calvary Chapel days.
The vestry organizes a summer camping trip, Tacoma Rainier baseball game, quiz nights, adult education in the faith, food bank, annual homeless people hosting... and more. Its an active church that takes their mission seriously.
Finally, they give people nice name tags to wear on Sunday morning (optional). Its great for me since Im horrible at remembering names. I love wearing mine because all of these wonderful friendly people who may also be name challenged can greet me by name!
Id give us five stars except that we arent perfect. An earlier review about the food bank tells that story. While Saint Andrews is more than just a food bank, it IS part of our ministry and can be improved.
