1 /5 D. Villarente Adelle: I have been a parishioner at St. Anthonys church for as long as I can remember. As I have grown up, I can always say Ive generally enjoyed each Sunday mass Ive gone to. While I can only speak from my perspective, I have always felt generally welcomed at St. Anthonys until this past Sunday. Never have I left a mass feeling regret that I had gone in the first place. Unfortunately, my older sister and I came a bit late and I was unable to get the name of the new priest who spoke at 11:30 a.m. mass on 10/22. He called LGBTQIA+ education propaganda, said that marriage should be between a man and a woman, and said that LGBTQIA+ people are simply, "confused." I was genuinely upset and even cried because of how angry I was at the priest. I was glad that others felt the same way. The male singer, who is also part of the LGBTQIA+ community, openly expressed his hurt at the end of the mass and was unsure if he wanted to continue his employment at the church because of the unwelcoming, hostile, and discriminatory environment that was created by this priest. Do not invite this priest back. I am not only upset at the priest but even more disappointed in St. Anthonys as a church. The decision to bring this priest into the church was evidently uninformed and reflects poorly on the church as a whole. While anti-LGBTQIA+ beliefs and monotheistic faiths are often seen as intertwined, it is my firm belief that it is one thing to have a religious belief and a completely different matter to disguise bigotry, hatred, and discrimination as the word of God. Funnily enough the priest was talking about hypocrites. I think it is hypocritical of St. Anthonys to invite a priest who is so openly selective about who is and isnt worthy in the eyes of God.
