5 /5 Digital Sparks: St. James Memorial Catholic Church, founded on December 8th, 1915, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community. Originating as Sacred Heart School, a mission established by the Sisters of Divine Providence in 1884, the church has evolved into a significant religious institution with a rich history.
The church building, constructed in 1915 at a cost of $7,500 by the LeGras Brothers Construction Company, showcases a distinctive architectural blend. Predominantly constructed of red brick, the church features round arched stained glass windows and a classical temple façade expressed within the brick masonry. A white entablature, colossal ionic columns, and a pentagonal cupola with a dome and cross add to the visual charm.
Named St. James in 1915 to honor the brother of Father Joseph Smith, whose donation facilitated the construction, the church has become a focal point for worship and community engagement. The Mass times, at 9:00 AM on Sundays and 4:00 PM on Saturdays, provide regular opportunities for the faithful to come together in prayer and reflection.
During my visit to St. James Memorial Catholic Church, I was warmly welcomed and experienced a truly uplifting service. The churchs historical connection to education, stemming from its roots as Sacred Heart School, reflects a commitment to nurturing both the spiritual and educational needs of the community. St. James Memorial Catholic Church, with its captivating architecture and deep-rooted history, continues to be a place where individuals can find solace, connect with their faith, and become part of a vibrant and welcoming community.
