1 /5 Hannah Cogswell: The sales woman at Jewelry Couture made more than a few snide remarks about my budget. I have been to multiple jewelry stores today and know that my budget is fairly reasonable. I will not be returning here.
Edit for clarity: My budget was well within the bounds of their collection. Having been in here a few times, I realize this is just their style. This tactic is known as the "negging" or "status challenge" sales technique, where sales associates treat customers with subtle disdain or dismissiveness to trigger a desire to prove their worth. By making the shopper feel undervalued, the associate leverages insecurity to prompt higher spending as a way to gain approval or status. I’m sure it works on some people… but for others it’s obvious and distasteful. I went down the street and found the perfect band at another store for a little under a grand- simple and pleasant.
